Safety rules when working with granite

Surface cleanliness

Granite must be dry, free from dust, oils, water and loose particles. Even minor contamination can break the seal and cause a sudden vacuum drop.

Seal inspection

Before every use, check the rubber sealing elements for cracks, deformation and wear. A damaged seal will not provide sufficient adhesion on the hard, smooth granite surface.

Pressure gauge reading

Always ensure the vacuum indicator has reached the required level (green zone) before lifting the slab. Never lift a load with insufficient vacuum.

Slab assessment

Do not lift slabs with visible cracks or chipped edges. Granite is an impermeable material – it naturally achieves excellent vacuum and strong grip. The only real risks are surface contamination and mechanical damage to the slab itself.

When transporting granite slabs with a vacuum lifter, no persons may be present in the zone beneath the suspended load. In the event of sudden loss of vacuum, a heavy granite slab poses a fatal hazard.

How to check the permissible lifting capacity?

Every suction pad on a GECO lifter has a load capacity table showing the safe lifting capacity at each vacuum level. Simply read the current value from the pressure gauge and compare it with the table – this is more reliable than theoretical calculations, as it accounts for real working conditions.

Is the GECO vacuum lifter suitable for granite?
Yes. Polished granite has a smooth, impermeable surface that provides excellent sealing with the rubber suction pads of the lifter. GECO 200, GECO 300 and GECO 300 PRO are successfully used for lifting granite worktops, floor slabs and cladding panels.
How do I check whether the lifter can handle a specific granite slab?

It requires a flow rate of min. 20 L/min and working pressure of 150 bar. It is ideal for industrial transport of large granite slabs on construction sites.
What should I do if the pressure gauge does not reach the green zone?
First check the cleanliness of the granite surface – even fine dust or moisture can prevent a tight seal. Then inspect the rubber seals – cracks or deformation require immediate replacement. If the problem persists, check the hoses and fittings of the vacuum system. Never lift a load with insufficient vacuum.
Is there a difference between polished and flamed granite when lifting?
Both polished and flamed granite are impermeable materials and are excellent for vacuum lifting. Natural stone achieves very high vacuum levels and a strong grip. Polished granite has a smoother contact surface with the seal, which may allow vacuum to build up faster. In both cases, the key factor is surface cleanliness – free from dust, oil and moisture.
